PUPILS paid tribute to a former teacher who passed away earlier this year by participating in a sponsored walk.
The students organised the walk to raise money for the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Bristol Children's Hospital as a tribute to their teacher, who died following bone marrow treatment for leukaemia.
The children at Vale of Berkeley College, in Wandswell, raised over £1,000 in memory of Lyn Wright, former home economics teacher and head of sixth form at the school for 17 years.
"Well done to everyone who took part, it was a really good community event, Mrs Wright would have been very proud," said Aidan Farrell, headteacher at the school.
Mrs Wright, a mother-of-three, died in February this year after suffering a brain haemorrhage while receiving ongoing treatment for a bone marrow transplant she had in 2006 for leukaemia.
At the time of Mrs Wright's death her husband Gary said: "Lyn was a great wife, a wonderful mother and someone fortunate enough to find an occupation she loved doing.
"She was a people person who loved her job and never wanted to be anything but a teacher."
Last week every pupil and member of staff at the school walked 10 miles around Berkeley, Sharpness and Purton.
The children raised nearly £300 in sponsorship and the school received an anonymous donation of £800.
Clare Evans, school sports co-ordinator, said: "All pupils were encouraged to raise a minimum of £10 and a prize was given to the pupil who raised the most money. Also there were a small number of pupils who chose to run the route.
"The pupils were impeccably behaved and were a real credit to the school."
