Thornbury beat Cam in rollercoaster match
Gloucester Division one;
Thornbury Ladies (116-6) beat Cam Ladies (107) by nine runs
ELECTING to bat first in excellent and sunny conditions, Thornbury Ladies started cautiously against an experienced Cam team in their 40-over league match at The Ship.
Despite the loss of an early wicket, skipper Kat Spray built a patient 22 before falling to a juggled catch at point, to leave Liane Leech, with an undefeated top score of 41, to guide the Thornbury total to 116-6 at the end of innings. Late support from Emily Waldron, Carys Allen and George Boston all added much needed urgency to the innings in a solid batting performance, though revealing early season rustiness and inexperience in maximising the run count.
By contrast, the opening Cam batters took every opportunity to steal quick singles and enabled them to maintain a healthy run rate against the opening bowlers.
Change bowlers Harri Harris (3-11) and Abbi Evans (4-25), then swept away the middle order and, supported by excellent catching, reduced Cam to 78-7.
But Cam skipper, Ali Dixon remained at the crease in total command, and found support from K Mathias to take the Cam total to 104 without further mishap, seemingly set to guide to a close win.
Then Rosie Tregear bowled Mathias for eight, and with Kat Spray catching Dixon for an excellent 56, it was suddenly 107-9.
A direct hit run out by Carys Allen wrapped up a closely fought game to leave Thornbury victorious.
