Vahid looking for Yate to push on

EDD Vahid admits the 2007/08 campaign was a disappointing one for Yate Town despite having just claimed the supporters player of the season and players player award.

The defender was the star of the night as he claimed the two prestigious awards at Yate's Presentation Evening at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall last Saturday.

However, for him it was just a consolation for a poor season in which Yate tailed off in the second half and finished in mid-table.

He said: "I've had an okay season but it could have been better and I would say that for us as a team.

"It's frustrating because when you look around the changing room there are a lot a good individuals and it's a good group but as a team we haven't done as well.

After recognising his efforts, Yate supporters will be desperately keen for Vahid, 26, to stay with the Lodge Road club next season.

Yate boss Richard Thompson is due to talk with all of the players once the group come back from their team tour of Marbella next week, and Vahid then hopes to look forward to a better season ahead.

He said: "I know Thommo will look to bring in new players, and the target has to be the play-offs.

"We proved last season that we're capable when we got good draws at Team Bath and Gloucester.

"Our home form was appalling, I think we were about ten points off the play-offs and we could easily find them if we win more at home."

Vahid was slightly surprised to receive his end of season awards but said he was pleased with them.

"It's always nice to be recognised by the fans especially as they pay their money and travel around to watch the team," he said.

"But to get it off the players is the big one because you spend the whole season with them and it's nice to know that they value your contribution."

Other winners were: Youth Team Players Player - Gary Simmons; Reserve Team Players Player - Grant Brown; Young Sportsman - Aston Newman; Fred Nicholls Memorial Cup - Rob Hughes; Fundraising Shield - John Burns; Clubman of Year - Derrick Smith.
