Sodbury earn local bragging rights against Hambrook
Bristol and North Somerset division 1st XI
Chipping Sodbury (138a.o) beat Hambrook (49 a.o) by 89 runs
CHIPPING SODBURY secured a morale boosting victory over local rivals Hambrook in a low scoring affair at The Ridings.
After being asked to bat on a drying track, Sodbury were given a good start by opening pair Jeremy Swatton and Craig Scully.
The pair reached 50 in good time before Scully was unfortunately run out at the non strikers end for 18.
Dave Reynolds joined the aggressive Swatton and the runs continued to flow. The 100 came up in 25 overs and Sodbury were well set for a large total.
However Reynolds (22) and Swatton (49) fell in quick succession which sparked a dramatic collapse as Sodbury went from 102-2 to 138 all out with a full three overs still to bat leaving Hambrook in pole position.
In reply Sodbury got off to the perfect start as Jon Toghill snapped up a wicket in the third over.
Toghill and opening partner Jamie Wakefield then produced a fine spell of quick bowling as wickets continued to tumble to leave Hambrook in real trouble at 8-4.
Jamie Rendell replaced Toghill (2-11) and the change paid dividends as the skipper broke the mid-order partnership.
Rendell finished with figures of 3-13 but the Sodbury hero was Jamie Wakefield.
He ripped through the lower order with a devastatingly accurate spell claiming 5-24 from 11 overs as Hambrook were dismissed for just 49 in the 23rd over.
Chipping Sodbury 2nds beat Hambrook 2nds by 1 wicket
SODBURY'S second string sneaked home to a one-wicket victory in a thrilling game on Hambrook Common.
Hambrook batted first and were restricted to 150-7 from their 45 overs.
Sodbury bowled economically, but the pick of the bowlers was Mike Garton (2-26) and Rob Wakefield (3-32).
Sodbury found batting just as hard going as they were reduced to 40-5 in reply and were heading for defeat, but a combination of youth and experience in the lower order turned the game.
First of all veteran pairing Mike Pearson and Paul Crabtree (28) put on 48 for the sixth wicket, then Pearson (33) and young Tom Febry (21) put on 46 for the seventh with some aggressive running.
It was then left to the final pairing of Mike Garton (2 not out) and Rob Wakefield (7 not out) to guide Sodbury home in the last over with four balls to spare.
Other Fixtures
CHIPPING Sodbury 3rd XI continued their good early season form with a 49-run victory over Knowle A.
They posted 224-6 from their allotted overs all thanks to a career best 79 from promising youngster Jack Townsend.
In reply, Sodbury bowled well but could not find a way through the Knowle defences as they were restricted to 175-6 from their 45 overs.
Sodbury 4th XI struggled to 131 all out in their game against Bishopston 3rd XI with several batsmen getting starts, but not able to push on and make a big score. Bishopston reached their target with four wickets in hand.
